"One dream can change your life." - Dan Gifford
Why
do you dream?
We dream during the REM, or rapid eye movement, phase of sleep. We experience the greatest amount of REM sleep in the first 2 years of our lives. In addition, when brain waves are measured by EKGs, it has been found the brain waves during periods of REM sleep are identical to when we are awake. This leads to the PHYSIOLOGICAL theory of dreams which believes that dreams are necessary to learning.
The PSYCHOLOGICAL theory is that dreams deal with immediate concerns in our lives that we have not been able to handle during the day.
Speaking from my personal experience, I believe both theories are valid. I seem to do better on tests when I have dreamt the night before and I often have dreams about things that have happened during the day. I have also had dreams that have shown me where an object that was lost to me during the day can be found.
Aristotle wrote of a connection between dreams, waking experiences, and emotional needs.
Many people believe that dreams are prophetic. Even the Bible speaks of prophets receiving visions in their dreams.
Sigmund Freud believed dreams to be symbolic of any number of things buried deep within our minds and our memories.
What secrets are your dreams trying to whisper to you?
Hi. My name is Lisa Marie and I would like to be your dream whisperer.
I have 37 years of experience, since that's how long I myself have been dreaming. I can still describe in detail some of the vivid, recurring dreams that I had as a small child.
I also mastered dream manipulation at a young age, not realizing at the time that it would become a useful tool in my adult life. I am able to wake up from a dream, and then go back to sleep and replay the dream, making changes to produce a favorable outcome. In addition, I am sometimes able to change things around during the initial dream, by bringing my conscious thoughts into my subconscious dream.
Did you know that you can also plan your dreams ahead of time? If I feel the need to have something clarified, I simply meditate on the subject and also ask to be shown the answer before falling asleep. Most of the time it works, and I awaken with either a greater understanding, or at the very least a peaceful feeling about the matter.
As far as interpreting dreams is concerned, you are actually your own best interpreter. It just takes a little practice. It helps to try to remember as much of the dream as you can when you first wake up. I find it helpful to keep a pen and paper near my bed so that I can jot down all that I remember. Also, take note of how you felt during or upon waking from the dream i.e. sad, happy, fearful, frustrated…Keep in mind that what an object means to me, or what an object universally means, may not be the same meaning that you place on the object. For example, for me, baseball brings forth feelings of fun and togetherness with friends. Universally, it is associated with a loyal feeling of patriotism to the good old U.S. of A. Maybe to someone else, though, all he can think of when thinking about baseball is the time a line drive nailed him in the kisser and took out two of his teeth, consequently causing his team to lose the game. That guy may then associate baseball with feelings of disappointment and pain. Perhaps for you, baseball invokes happy memories of tossing the ball around with your Father.
The key, then, to dream interpretation is to look inside of you for the answers. Much of dream interpretation deals with instinct and self perception. Again, it does take some practice (it's not something that can typically be birthed overnight), and since I've had plenty of practice, I hope you will contact me if you would like a different perspective as to the meaning of your dream(s). I would be honored to help. Until then, sleep well and listen to the whispering of your dreams.
